“Through our eyes the universe is perceiving itself and through our ears the universe is listening to its cosmic harmonies and we are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence”
In December 2008 Rebecca Collins set off from the Argentinean port of Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego, aboard the Polar Pioneer for the Antarctic Peninsula. What the Artist took from this world, her visions, her interpretations, are all here. We have a privileged opportunity to glimpse this removed landscape, not just through the usual channels of photographic reproduction or documentary film, but in a form translated by the artist. Her motivation as a painter was to remove herself from the familiar; to seek a total immersion in a world of vast distances, impossible beauty and isolation and most importantly to see the palette of ice: blue, in an immensely subtle spectrum.
From childhood, Rebecca has been drawn to the idea of the purity of the blue found in compressed ice and the wild alien landscape in this staggeringly beautiful part of the world.
Following her trip to Antartica, this body of work was a subject matter for a solo show.
